Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is a relatively new approach to the design and management of research and innovation processes, which is currently gaining prominence primarily at European level, but increasingly also at national level, for example in the UK, the Netherlands and Norway. At its core, RRI is about aligning research and innovation more closely than before with societal values and needs. The preliminary study demonstrates that RRI is based on numerous concepts and methods, some of which have been part of the toolkit for shaping research, technology and innovation for decades. Following an overview of the conceptual foundations and different interpretations of RRI, selected approaches are examined that can contribute to the implementation of RRI in research and innovation processes. Given the significant role that businesses play in research and innovation, particular attention is paid to the integration of the RRI philosophy into corporate organisational and management frameworks.
