Interoperability and digital autonomy

Interoperability allows different digital systems to communicate and exchange data. It is increasingly seen as a way to reduce dependence on large technology companies, make it easier for users to switch providers and create opportunities for new market entrants. However, interoperability does not automatically deliver these benefits. The Rathenau Instituut is investigating what interoperability can achieve in practice, what obstacles exist, and under what conditions it can contribute to greater digital autonomy.
