Digital currencies: Money of the future?

Digitisation represents a major shift for the Swiss financial system. Both the decline in cash transactions and the spectacular rise of cryptocurrencies are evidence of this. In near future, new virtual forms of money could also emerge, for example from big tech (such as Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple and Microsoft) or from central banks with the possible introduction of central bank digital currency (CBDC). It is important for all of society to reflect on these developments, because almost all areas of our daily life could be affected by the appearance of these new forms of money.
