Precision Agriculture Technology Assessment
Background: Precision agriculture generally involves collecting sensor data that are specific in location and/or time and using it to improve resource management through the precise application of inputs, such as water, fertilizer, and feed, leading to more efficient production. New technologies offer a possible revolution in farm operations and promise to reduce production costs, increase yields, and protect the environment by conserving water and reducing nutrient pollution. However, challenges restrict farmers' ability to take advantage of these technologies, notably, limited broadband availability in rural areas and limited cost effectiveness for some farmers. Key Questions: 1) To what extent have precision agriculture technologies been adopted and what additional technologies are available or under development? 2) What federal programs provide support for precision agriculture? 3) What are the benefits and challenges of adopting and using precision agriculture technologies? 4) What policy options could help enhance benefits or address challenges related to adopting and using precision agriculture technologies?
