Encryption has many benefits but can also be used to conceal criminal activity. This POSTnote outlines encryption techniques, their applications and their reliability. It also discusses controversial government proposals to give public authorities new powers under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, relating to the handling of encrypted data in criminal investigations.
