The Parliamentary Office for the Evaluation of Scientific and Technological Choices (OPECST) held a public hearing on 5 July 2006 on the risks linked to "electromagnetic pollution" generated in particular by cell phones and threatening persons with artificial implants such as pacemakers. The hearing was presided over by Mr. Jean Dionis du Séjour, Deputy, and Mr. Daniel Raoul, Senator, members of the OPECST. Today, the continuing debate is tending to move from the direct impact of electromagnetic waves on human health towards the issue of "electromagnetic pollution" which is accused of disrupting the proper functioning of devices vital to human health, such as pacemakers. While the public hearing did not settle once and for all this scientific debate, it shed light on rarely evoked questions, such as the difficulty of providing the authorities with information on incidents whose causes have been identified and put down to electromagnetic disturbances. In addition, the public hearing revealed the complexity of the question raised.
