The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has created growing excitement and much debate about its potential to revolutionize entire industries, particularly with recent developments in generative AI, which can create text, images, audio, video, and other content when prompted by a user. Use of generative AI has exploded to over 100 million users globally due to recently enhanced capabilities and user interest, prompting concerns about unintended societal and environmental effects. At Congress' request, GAO will continue work on generative AI by conducting a series of technology assessments and a federal audit on the use of generative AI technologies. Key Questions: 1) What is known about potential environmental effects of generative AI technologies 2) What is known about potential human effects of generative AI technologies? 3) What potential solutions or processes ("options") exist to enhance the benefits or mitigate the environmental or human effects of generative AI technologies?
