Updates are indispensable for the security of our data and for the reliable functioning of information tools. They allow the tools to evolve and thus remain attractive. However, they also entail risks: Under certain circumstances, software updates lead to malfunctions or can even render a device unusable. Given the frequency of updates and the complexity of their consequences, users are forced to make decisions without being fully aware of their implications. Updates could lead users, companies or even the state into undesirable dependencies.
