The article looks at the issues related to the Arctic. In the coming years, it may emerge as a region of key importance for energy security as well as international trade and transport, as the melting of the polar icecap opens access to natural resources and new shipping lanes. Apart from these threads, the author covers also the legal aspects, including the Arctic Council, a high-level intergovernmental forum (Poland holds a permanent observer status in this body).
