Converging technologies and sciences. The state of the debate and political activities on "Converging Technologies"
Coenen, Christopher (2008): Konvergierende Technologien und Wissenschaften. Der Stand der Debatte und politischen Aktivitäten zu »Converging Technologies«. TAB background paper no. 016. Berlin: Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB), 266 pp.
This report analyses the political and academic debate, as well as relevant activities, concerning so-called ‘Converging Technologies’ (CT). The debate tends to encompass a wide-ranging discussion of science, technology and society, as the acronym ‘CT’ generally refers to several key technological fields as well as the associated or relevant disciplines. The latter also encompasses the social sciences and humanities, as well as philosophy (in particular including the ethics of technology), which, moreover, play an important role in the debate themselves. The study focuses on discussions and activities that explicitly relate to the concept of convergence. The primary aim of the report is therefore to highlight the programmatic and practical significance of the concept in terms of research, technology and science policy (and not to provide a technology assessment of the NBIC fields or other converging sciences and technologies)
