This report maps the knowledge currently available in the Netherlands to support decision-making on a final disposal site for radioactive waste. At present, this waste is stored above ground on a temporary basis, but the country aims to establish a permanent disposal solution in the future. The report shows, among other things, that the development of the necessary knowledge could benefit from a clear step-by-step plan outlining the key decisions the government will need to make in the years ahead.
For this study, the Rathenau Instituut interviewed 24 experts, organised two workshops, and reviewed the relevant literature. The report serves as one of the preparatory studies for the Rathenau Instituut’s forthcoming 2024 advisory report on how the Netherlands can best decide on the disposal of its radioactive waste.
