This publication explores how research funders and knowledge institutions can stimulate, support, and evaluate meaningful citizen science within mission-driven research programmes.
In recent years, collaborating with citizens in research has grown increasingly popular. Especially when it comes to understanding and addressing societal challenges, the experiences, knowledge, and expertise of citizens are of great value. That is why this report focuses on citizen science in mission-driven research programmes — where the primary aim is not scientific curiosity or economic growth, but addressing pressing societal issues such as climate change or social inequality.
The report shows that involving citizens in science, with the right adjustments, can create added value for both citizens and researchers. For instance, research funders can revise financial and legal frameworks to make it easier for citizens and researchers to participate. Knowledge institutions, in turn, can create more time and space for collaboration between citizens and scientists.
