| 2024/25:RFR1 |
There is currently limited knowledge about the support provided to individuals on sick leave due to stress-related disorders and what measures are effective in helping them return to work. This applies both to support from employers in the form of work-oriented rehabilitation, and to care, treatment, and rehabilitation provided by the healthcare system. The purpose of this report is to provide the Social Insurance Committee with a knowledge base for future consideration of matters relating to the sick leave and rehabilitation process.
The findings presented in the report are primarily based on survey responses from a large number of individuals on sick leave, as well as a study of case files from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. The analyses show that four out of five individuals who have been on long-term sick leave due to stress-related disorders receive some form of workplace accommodations to facilitate their return to work. However, only one in three state that they have received the support they need to a high degree. Many request additional measures, primarily those aimed at resolving structural work environment problems at the workplace.
Virtually all individuals on sick leave due to stress-related disorders receive some form of treatment, but only slightly more than one third report that they have received the care and treatment they need to a high degree. Many believe they could have returned to work earlier if they had received better or more timely care.
