Genetic Edition in Agriculture
Nuñez Acosta, E. & Carmina Barberena, J. (2018). INCyTU Note 17 Genetic Edition in Agriculture
The techniques used to improve the plants include the selection of plants, the crossing between different varieties and the manipulation of their genetic material. The genetic edition is used to create crops that are resistant to herbicides or with a higher concentration of nutrients, such as iron and zinc. Some believe that plant improvement is the fifth best investment to manage malnutrition in developing countries. However, it is necessary to understand both its possible risks and its benefits. For example, a possible problem is the dependence of farmers with agricultural monopolies.
